Haibu looked back at Scotty, who shrugged his shoulders. He only saw and heard a lion growling back at her. “I don’t understand. Why can’t he hear you?”
“He has not learned that every living thing is alive, with feelings, and should be treated as such!”
“I’ve done all of that?” Haibu asked.
“You must have, little Haibu. Here you stand, speaking with the animals.”
“Tell me more. What is your name? How am I able to talk to some animals?”
The lion leaned toward her. “My name is Eron. If you really want to know the answer to that question, pay close attention to what I am about to tell you. Every single living organism, at one point in time, could communicate with one another. We worked together to grow and become living creatures, like you and those you see around you. At some point in history, humans created their own so-called ‘laws of society.’”
Eron resumed pacing back and forth as he spoke. “Those laws made the humans feel like they were no longer sharing the earth with animals, but instead were the masters of all living beings. Before man developed his own language, he was much more in tune with other living creatures, even the plants that supply him oxygen. We could all speak and understand one another!”
Eron raised his voice and made a fist with his right paw. “The desire to be different without accepting differences in others is, and will ultimately be, mankind’s downfall. Once they divided their beliefs and nationalities, they no longer saw even each other as equals, only as different. Unfortunately for the animals, we were the first to be taken advantage of. Once man had a grasp on us, they turned their attention on each other. They enslaved and oppressed those who dared to be different. Man is too consumed with the ideal that they need to be the biggest, the best, and the wealthiest, when they should be striving to be the most honest and compassionate.”
“Why did humans do this?” asked Haibu.
“No one knows,” Eron replied sadly. “Greed, gluttony, and a lack of love, empathy, and compassion have consumed the earth. All living beings are no longer treated as equal.”
Scotty walked over to Haibu. “Look, bub, you’ve had enough time. This lion isn’t going to talk.”
“Why does he call you ‘bub’?” the lion asked.
“He thinks I’m a boy,” she answered, then turned to Scotty. “By the way, I’m not a boy. And my name is Haibu, not ‘bub.’” Haibu pulled the hood off her head, revealing her long, flowing hair, with some strands sporting beads like those of the Shookia.
Scotty’s eyes grew as big as baseballs.
“Wait … you … boy … Jersey?” Scotty looked stunned as he plopped down on the ground.
Eron and Haibu stared at Scotty for a moment, then Haibu broke the silence. “So, what about food? I’ve eaten more animals than I want to remember,” she admitted.
“Hunting to survive is nature. Hunting for fun is lunacy,” Eron replied.
Haibu thought for a moment. “Do you know what I need to do to get home?” she asked.
